FAQs and Useful Information
Is there a cost to attend this event?
No, this event is entirely free.
Do I have to be a member of MTDA, ATHE, or any other organization?
No, there is no membership requirement. Everyone is welcome! There is actually no cost or procedure to become a member of MTDA– you just sign up for our listserv to be in-the-know about all MTDA events (click here for instructions on how to sign up for the listserv).
What if I don’t work in musical theatre, music theatre, or dance?
This event is still for you! The sessions are about scholarship, pedagogy, practice, and collaborative work in theatre studies in general. In fact, most of the sessions will be applicable to any field of study.
How do I register?
You register by filling out a google form (click on this link). We will send out the Zoom links a week before the event.
What is the structure of each session?
The sessions range from 30 -90 minutes; the duration is listed with the session information. There will be 15 minute breaks in between each session. All of the sessions are a blend of presentations and discussions with the audience.
What if I want to attend the MTDA Winter Symposium but I don’t have childcare? Or what if I am not in an ideal space to be “at an event”? What if I can’t have my camera on? What if I need to eat a meal?
Please come! We want you at the events.
You should not feel pressure to turn your camera or mic on if you don’t want to - we will monitor the chat and read typed comments out loud so that you can contribute your thoughts in an alternative medium.
We welcome the kids who share the digital space and even the pets who insist on hogging the camera unexpectedly. Feel free to bring a snack and/or beverage, situate yourself so that you are physically comfortable, and take care of your needs.
The only rule that we insist on is that we keep the sessions a safe space where the community supports and respects each other.
What if I have accessibility needs?
We will make sure that each session utilizes the “live caption” function on zoom. In addition, we encourage people to feel free to turn off your camera and/or mic if you choose. We will also have someone monitoring the chat if you prefer to use written communication during the session. If you have additional needs, please feel free to contact Barrie Gelles so that we can make sure the sessions work for you. Accessibility is important!
Who can I contact if I have more questions?
If you have questions or need more information, please visit our website (at this link) or contact the Symposium organizers: Barrie Gelles ([email protected]) and/or Ryan Scobble ([email protected]).
